Translation for "Coffee Houser Shei" - Sung by Manna Dey

This is the translation for the song which I sang on Sep 23rd 2009, at Kali Mata temple, Rangehills, Pune. It's a beautiful Bengali song, sung by Manna Dey. Quite a nostalgic number.

Here's the link for my video...

Translation:
-----------

Beginning part:
---------------

Those get-togethers at the coffee-house are no longer there today....no longer there today
Where have those beautiful evenings vanished away...they are no longer there today...

1st Stanza
----------

Nikhilesh is in Paris and Moidhul is in Dhaka, and we don't hear from them anymore,
The guitarist from "Grander" group, Goaniz D'Souza is resting peacefully in his coffin,
No one knows, what pain or shock he suffered in love, but Rama Roy is in a mental asylum today,
Omol is in great pain, suffering from a deadly cancer, life didn't spare him at all.

2nd Stanza
----------

Shuja is the happiest among all of us today, she married a rich guy...
She is laded with jewellery all over her, and roams around in luxurious cars,
Nikhilesh Shainyal, the guy from Art College used to photograph for advertisements,
And whenever there was any joke cracked among us, D'Souza would just keep on staring silently without uttering a word...

3rd Stanza
----------

On the same table, we used to enjoy smoking "Charminar" cigarettes for the 3-4 hours we spent there,
Sometimes we used to chat about Bishnu Dey, and sometimes we used to discuss about Jaamini Rai
Summers or rains, we all used to get together at the coffee house after completing our work, irrespective of where we were,
At 4 in the evenings, we used to start our chats, and at 7:30 we all used to get up and leave...

4th Stanza
----------

Face of a poet, and a bag hanging on his shoulders, the name of Omol would be wiped off forever,
He couldn't get even a single one of his poems published, he never managed to get the price for his talent,
At the social functions of his office, Rama Roy used to act in a play called "Manager",
Moidhul, a reporter by profession, used to read us the headlines from the newspapers, on the table, everyday..

Concluding part:
---------------

Those 7 people are not here anymore, but the table and the 7 coffee-filled cups are still here,
The garden is the same, new flower buds have bloomed here, its just that the old gardeners are not here anymore,
There are so many dreams which emanate from this coffee house and turn into reality,
And there are so many dreams which just fade away beyond the clouds, without being realized,
There are so many people who come and leave at this coffee house, Lives change...but the only thing that never changes..
is this coffee house which still keeps standing at one place, forever.

Those get-togethers at the coffee-house are no longer there today....no longer there today
Where have those beautiful evenings vanished away...they are no longer there today...

You have done a great translation. Kudos.

Thank you ever so much for this. Born and brought up Bengali. Speak Sylheti but unfortunately never got to grasp the written bengali and speak it. I love this song but couldn't understand everything in it. This was very helpful.

udutta
